Help us to catch the nuisance vehicles

Good afternoon, Medway.

With the warmer weather comes an increase in nuisance vehicles on our green spaces and off-road areas. As you can imagine we get multiple calls from all over Medway simultaneously about these nuisance vehicles. This weekend has been no exception.

Of course, we go to the calls that we can and often as soon as offenders see a police car they make off in to the woodland and get away. Sometimes we come in unmarked cars and try and use the element of surprise however by the time we get out of the car and close enough to the offenders they have realised, and we might catch one out of a group.

Over the summer we run regular operations where multiple patrols go out working with drones and we often catch multiple offenders. Although effective this is very resource heavy.

Medway council have just launched a public space protection order over Medway allowing us to now fine vehicles we catch. This is positive however we need to catch offenders first.

We did a lot of work on off road vehicles last summer in the Chatham area and we found that the most effective and efficient way of dealing with this nuisance is to gather evidence, identify offenders and surprise them at their homes.

With this uphill battle we need your help as the public.

Often people will call us and tell us there are off road bikes with a limited description. What would really help us would be?

  • Any clear picture or videos of offenders (but don’t put yourself at any risk getting them)
  • Licence plate numbers (if vehicles have them)
  • Accompanying vehicles – often nuisance bikes travel to off road areas in vans or on trailers. Tell us the registrations of the accompanying vehicles!
  • Is it your neighbour? Are your neighbours or the family across the road always going out on these bikes but you don’t say as you don’t want to fall out with them?
  •

Tell us about any way via crime stoppers or just reply to this post using the buttons at the bottom.

As I said at the start of this post, we can’t possibly get to every nuisance vehicle call that comes in today (all though we will work our socks off trying) but with your help we can catch and fine them retrospectively. If it’s a regular offender, we can even remove the bike or vehicles.

Together lets give them something to worry about this summer!
